SHEET 05 / BATHROOM TILING

Bathroom tiling starts with the wall and floor behind it.

Kitchen renovation in Murrumbeena is the main focus of this site. Bathroom wall and floor tiling is a related capability. Ivan Bodnar, an independent home renovation specialist with approximately 15 years of hands-on residential renovation experience, checks the substrate and the moisture conditions before any tile is chosen. A tiled surface is only as sound as the surface it is bonded to.

A tradesperson wearing a cap and protective clothing applies sealant or caulk around white cabinetry or window trim in a kitchen renovation workspace, with nearby surfaces covered in protective plastic.

SHEET 05 / CHECKLIST

Checked at the on-site assessment, before tiling

01  Signs of moisture: staining, swelling, lifting grout or drummy tiles

02  Whether the wall lining suits wet-area tiling

03  Floor level, flex and falls towards the waste

04  Whether old tiles must come off or can be prepared

05  Where waterproofing and plumbing elements need an authorised practitioner

06  How tile edges meet fixtures, trims and other surfaces

SHEET 05 / SEQUENCE

After the assessment: the tiling sequence

Once the checks above are done and the scope is agreed in the written quotation, the bathroom tiling follows a set order. Each stage depends on the one before it.

Where the job includes regulated waterproofing, an appropriately authorised practitioner handles that stage, and tiling starts after it. See Licensed Trades for Plumbing and Electrical Work.

01

Remove or prepare

Old tiles come off where the assessment showed they need to, or they are prepared to take the new finish. The exposed surface is then made good before anything else goes on.

02

Set out around fixtures and falls

The tile layout is planned around the waste, taps, vanity and edges, so cuts land in sensible places and floor tiles follow the falls to the waste.

03

Lay and grout

Wall and floor tiles are laid with adhesive and grout suited to the substrate and the wet area, then cleaned back once set.

04

Seal junctions

Where tiles meet fixtures, trims and changes of plane, the junctions are finished with a suitable sealant rather than rigid grout, so the edges can handle small movement.

What authorised specialists handle

Licensed plumbing and electrical work is carried out by appropriately authorised specialists. Regulated waterproofing or plumbing elements in a bathroom may also need an appropriately authorised practitioner. See Licensed Trades for Plumbing and Electrical Work.
