A laundry has the same problems as a kitchen, packed into less space: water near the tap and the machine, cabinetry under constant use, and floors and walls that have to cope with moisture. This site is mainly about kitchen renovation in Murrumbeena. Laundry renovation is a related capability, and it follows the same approach: Ivan Bodnar checks the existing condition first, then talks you through the practical options and suitable materials.

Most laundry work comes down to four layers. Each one depends on the condition of whatever sits behind it or underneath it.
Cabinetry
Base and overhead storage beside the tub or machine. Ivan checks whether the existing carcasses are sound or swollen from moisture before suggesting reuse or replacement.
Benchtops and surfaces
A folding bench or a surface over the machines needs suitable materials for a damp room, plus edges and joints that will hold up.
Tiling
Splashbacks and wall tiles only last if the substrate is right. Surface preparation comes before any tile is chosen. See tiling.
Flooring
Levels, the subfloor, and how the floor meets the cabinetry and the doorway. See flooring.
01 — Moisture. Signs of past leaks around the tub, the machine connections and the base of the walls.
02 — Substrate suitability. Whether the walls and floor can take tiles, panels or a new floor covering without patching or replacement.
03 — Service access. Where the taps, waste and power points sit, and whether the layout you want would mean moving them.
04 — Underlying damage. Anything behind the old cabinetry that affects what can sensibly go back in.
Putting in new finishes before these checks can mean avoidable rework. The right scope depends on what the inspection finds. The same thinking is explained for kitchens in What New Kitchen Finishes Sit On.
